At our most recent network gathering, we explored one of the most strategic issues of our time: critical raw materials and their significance for geopolitics, electrification, and Sweden’s competitiveness. At a time when demand for lithium, rare earth elements, and other innovation-critical metals is rapidly increasing, knowledge of these resources is becoming ever more important - not least for the business community.
We had the privilege of listening to Eva Krutmeijer (RD02), Founder of EKKO, and Maria Sunér (RD18), CEO of Svemin. They shared both research and industry perspectives on the role of lithium in the energy transition, China’s position in the value chain, and what the EU’s new raw materials strategy means for Sweden as one of Europe’s most important mining nations.
Some key takeaways from the afternoon:
How Sweden can contribute to increased production:
The potential and expertise are in place
The political will exists
Regulatory frameworks (and politics) create challenges and barriers
Financing and market conditions remain challenging
Public acceptance is essential
Key challenges:
Availability of minerals and metals
Battery technology and chemical expertise
Battery manufacturing capacity
Geopolitical uncertainty
EU cohesion
Sustainability targets
It was a highly insightful and engaging afternoon, filled with new perspectives, important insights, and valuable conversations within the network. A big thank you to our appreciated speakers and all participants who contributed to a dynamic and inspiring discussion!
