During a two-day program, Ruter Dam's Business Network got to visit LKAB's mine in Kiruna and Malmberget in GĂ€llivare.
In Kiruna and Malmberget there are the world's two largest underground mines for mining iron ore. The iron and steel industry today accounts for as much as about a quarter of the industry's total carbon dioxide emissions in Sweden, at the same time the demand for steel increases by almost 50 percent in the period up to 2050 - of which LKAB is now carrying out its biggest transformation during its 130 year journey and is the largest industrial transformation in Sweden's history and aims to reach its goal in 2045, when LKAB's products and processes must be completely carbon dioxide-free.
The first day started with a visit to the LKAB Visitor Center, an exhibition 540 meters underground that presented the journey from how everything started to how the development has progressed until today.
The day then continued with a tour and presentations focusing on the urban transformation, where the new city center is now inaugurated.
We ended the day with a lovely 4-course dinner at restaurant Hjalmar LundbohmsgÄrden.
During Friday, we started with a site visit to GĂ€llivare Malmgruva where, among other things, we got to visit the production facility and see with our own eyes the complex process - from sleeping, anchoring to pelletizing. Finally, the steel is transported by electrified trains to Narvik, where the steel is shipped out to Europe and the rest of the world.
